Introduction  

This 2005-2006 Annual Statistical Abstract reflects continuous scientific and applied efforts aimed at providing a comprehensive package of data and information covering the various aspects of economic and social life in Iraq.

This document has significant importance as related to development policies and programmes prepared to cover all development levels, since authentic and reliable data and information are the right basis for policy and decision making process. These kinds of data and information are indispensable for decision making at all levels; government, private enterprises, research centers and all other private and public affairs.

This 2005-2006 Annual Statistical Abstract has been published under the new conditions in Iraq characterized by collective efforts to build democracy and institutions aiming at creating a healthy and legal environment based on transparency, accountability and constructive dialogue. These principles, that need to be universalized, translated and applied to real life, would not be well established in the society if not built on authentic and accurate data and information.

This Abstract is divided into chapters and sections covering Natural feature, Vital Statistics , Labour Force , Agriculture , Industry , Building and Construction , National Accounts , Fixed Capital Formation , Foreign and Domestic Trade , Transport and Communication , Education , Health , Oil and Culture and Information . Some information have further classified as per the economic activities: public, private, mixed and Cooperative sectors in order to highlight the individual contribution of these sectors in the production process.

Being proud of this achievement , done by the Central Organization for Statistics and Information Technology (COSIT), we appreciate the efforts of all those , who contributed in its production from ministries and all other national, governmental and non-governmental, agencies and hopes that this document be an illuminated tool to establish a new development experience in the country based on updates , benefiting from the outcome of the rapid scientific development around the world . MOPDC also hopes that this document will meet the demand of the development related users of these data and information whether be Public Sector Institutions, Private Sector, Research Centers, Universities, etc.
