Consumer Price Index Numbers
Indicators in Iraq
for December 2009
The
Central Organisation for Statistics and Information Technology has completed its
monthly report on inflation in Iraq as reflected by the consumer price index
(CPI). The index reflects the retail prices of consumer basket in chosen markets
in Baghdad and other governorates.
The
report shows the followings:
1.
The CPI for
December 2009 as compared with the
previous month increased
at a rate
of (1.3%) mainly due to the
increase
in
prices of (Alcoholic Drinks ; Clothes - cloths and shoes ; Furniture ; Fuel &
Light ; Medical Services and Medicines ;
Miscellaneous Services & Goods and Rent) groups at a rates of
(1.5% , 0.6% , 1.2%
, 5.6% , 0.4% , 0.1% , 1.7%) respectively , while
the prices of (Food-stuff ; Transport & communications) have
decreased
at rates of (0.8% , 0.4%) respectively .

The inflation indicator decreased for
December 2009
in comparison with
December 2008
by a rate of (4.4%) mainly due to decrease in the
prices of the following commodities & services groups (Clothes - cloths and
shoes ; Furniture ; Fuel & Light ; Transport &communications; Medical Services
and Medicines) at rates of (4.0% , 3.2% , 41.0%
,
6.6% , 3.7%) respectively, while the prices of (Food-stuff ; Tobacco &
Alcoholic Drinks ; Miscellaneous Services & Goods and Rent)
have
increased at rates of
(2.6% , 6.0% , 6.6% , 9.3%) respectively
.

The core inflation*amounted to (20651.1) with an
increase of (0.8%) as compared with the previous month and an increase of (6.0%)
as compared with December
2008.
The Head Line Inflation has
decreased from 2.7% on 2008 into -2.8% on 2009, The core Inflation has decreased
from 12.7% on 2008 into 6.9% on 2009
*The core or
underlying inflation is defined as the rate of change of CPI calculated by
excluding the fuel derivatives (kerosene, LPG and Gasoline).
