services activity in Iraq soon
To protect patients and staffs of health institutions from
environmental pollution risks
The Central Organization for Statistics and Information Technology/ Ministry of
Planning and Development Cooperation put the final arrangements to begin
implementation of the environmental survey of the medical services activity in
Iraq in 2008 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, an initial plan have
been drafting of detailed objectives includes timing, mechanism of work,
training of cadres, preparation of requirements, field implementation and

of the survey will last for six months and includes all Iraqi governorates and
Kurdistan region, this survey aimed to assess the realities of medical waste
management in health institutions to make use of making plans and strategies of
environmental realities advancement and reach the goal of protecting the
environment and society from risks.

reality of healthy environment in Iraq comes
through knowledge
the numbers of inpatients and patients consulted to health institutions,
knowledge of numbers, quantities and category of commodity requirements that
supplies and used in those institutions and what types of waste, according to
the International Classification that approved by World Health Organization and
the calculation of quantities and numbers of waste. Also clarified that the
survey will assist the beneficiaries are(the Ministries of Health and
Ministries of Environment) to informing the current method that used in the
management, treatment and disposal of medical waste and the extent to which this
method identity for valid environmental legislation, and knowledge of consumed
and surplus water quantities within the organization also method of disposal
from it, in addition to knowledge of the appropriate administrative system
charge of waste management and environmental education levels.
The source added that the environmental survey project will provide a lot of
statistical data on the status of medical waste management within the medical
institutions to help the stakeholders and decision makers to develop waste
management system, in addition to providing sufficient information on points of
imbalances and weaknesses in environmental legislation and regulations that
needed to protect the environment of hospitals and to protect patients and
workers from the risks of dealing with waste and in the first class protection
the external environment.
