Drop level of unemployment in Iraq to 15% in 2008


The Central Organization for Statistics and Information Technology in the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation declares “that unemployment rates in Iraq had been witnessed obvious decline during 2008 compared with that recorded in the previous years”.
 
A press release issued by the publication and public relations Directorate in COSIT demonstrates that unemployment rate for the population at the age of (15) years and over reached (15%)... pointed out that the results had been  demonstrated by the employment and unemployment Survey which was implemented during the year of 2008 at four stages and included (18144) households have been distributed to all of Iraq's governorates, including the governorates of Kurdistan region... the results showed that the unemployment rate decreased through the four stages of survey implementation... As the rate of unemployment between the population at the age of (15) years and over reached (18%) during the first quarter of 2008, in the second quarter (16%) and at rate of (15%) in the third quarter, while the unemployment rate in the fourth quarter was (12%).

The statement added, that rate of underemployment is meant (the workers who age "15" years and over wished-for an additional or new work, that is the number of working hours are few), has increased in the last four quarters, so the rate reached (29%), while the rate during the first quarter reached(22%), then rose up to (27%) in the second quarter , and rose in the third quarter to (28%), Then continue the increase in the fourth quarter of 2008 to reach (30%).
 
And about unemployment rates among young people aged (15-24) years, “The statement mentioned”: It was reached (30%) at the general level during the year of 2008, so it’s reached during the first quarter (34%) then dropped slightly in the second quarter reached (31%),then continued the decline during third and fourth quarters to record (29%) and (26%) respectively.
 
The statement issued by COSIT also declared that employment rate of children aged (5-17) years reached (6%), when reached at the first stage of the survey (5%), then continued at (6%) in the last three stages.
 
It should be noted that the Central Organization for Statistics carried out the employment and unemployment survey during the year of 2006 included (15228) households, showed that the unemployment rate among the population age (15) years and over was (17.5%) while among the young people aged (15-24) years about (31%).
