Numbers
and Proportions of widows in Iraq...
Recently speeches have been increased about the numbers and proportions of
widows in Iraq...The speakers disagreed between them about their estimation,
where some of them were exaggerated. When some press reports indicated that the
proportion of widowed women by the violence amounted to about (80%) of the total
Iraqi women, while others pointed out that the number exceeded two million
widows.
According
to the available data and indicators in the Central Organization for Statistics
and Information Technology...We would like to clarify the following facts:
-
According to the results of Iraq Household
socio-Economic survey which was carried out by COSIT during the year of
2007... Based on the estimation of the number of Iraqi population so the
number of widows in 2007 reached (899707) widows, at rate about (9%)
according to the results of the Iraqi Household Socio-Economic survey
IHSES-2007.
-
The results of the survey mentioned above and
the population estimates for the year of 2009 demonstrated a convergence in
the rate of widows by age groups, so the age group of (12-14) years has not
witnessed any case of widowing...while the rate of widowed women of age
group (15-24) years did not exceed (1%)... and its rate in the age group
(25-34) years reached (1.5%) that is less than (2%)... then the percentage
of women widowed
increase
slightly to (5%) and (6%) among women aged between (35 to 44) years .. This
rate record noticeably increase among women of advanced age group (65 years
and over) to reach more than (62%), and this ratio is regarded normal,
according to the average ages in Iraq, which is estimated at (58) years.
In the same time that we affirm our devotion and make every effort to
provide accurate and comprehensive information to be available for truth
researchers... We wish of all to investigate the accuracy at launch of any
data or indicators relating to various aspects of life in Iraq because of
its importance in the development of Iraqi society...With appreciation.
